Ep002 6 Ways to Biblically Counsel Yourself

“Why would we need to biblically counsel ourselves?” one might ask.

Anger… Fear…Worry… Anxiety… Disappointment… Feeling overwhelmed… Depression… Despair…

Sound familiar? These are just some of the emotions that can seem to pounce on us for no reason at all, or for perfectly rational reasons.

What are some ways believers find hope and guidance in Word of God in such circumstances? What are some ways we can apply God’s Word to biblically counsel ourselves in such moments?

Show Notes

Taking our cue from David’s conversation with himself in Psalm 43:5, we’ll answer those questions today on Episode 002 of Grace and Peace Radio.

Episode Number 002

Title 6 Ideas on How to Biblically Counsel Yourself

Notes & Links

“Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.” Ps 43:5 (HCSB)

David counseled himself! Instead of “Assess, Develop, Do” it might be easer to think of it as 3-R’s:

  • REFLECT – Ask “Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me?”
  • REMEMBER – “Put your hope in God”
  • RECOMMIT – “For I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.”

6 Ideas on How to Biblically Counsel Yourself

  1. Read the Bible … A LOT
  2. Is there a promise(s) you can claim?
  3. Is there a command to be obeyed?
  4. Is there a “put off / put on” opposite behavior to start doing?
  5. Is there an example in the Bible you can look to? The Bible is FULL of examples, such as…
    a) We just looked at David in Psalm 43
    b) Joshua “Be strong and courageous”
    c) The nation of Israel in the OT (1 Corinthians 10:1-6,11)
  6. Memorize Scripture – Make “deposits” in the bank so you have

*Note: I’m indebted to so many people whose books I’ve read over the years to help me think of these six methods (there are probably many more). This is only meant to scratch the surface. -AR

Jimmy Hamilton – Evangelist and Itinerant Street Preacher in Scotland

The subject of fear is addressed so much in Scripture that we can see that since the fall, it is a major issue. We fear every day, every single one of us. It is only lunatics who never fear. The antidote, of course, is faith in God, to fear him. “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28).
