“Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”Matthew 13:51-52 NIV
This page is where I’m going to start a running list of articles, devotionals, and other “treasures” I find that are maybe too short for a blog post about but are worth sharing.
http://www.VanceHavner.com – I have read Vance Havner’s Day by Day devotional through several times over the years. His writing is clear and concise. This is one worth finding on eBay or wherever to have in your hand, but you can read each day’s devotional online here.
Adolphe Monod’s Farewell to His Friends – “Adolphe Monod, was beyond dispute the greatest preacher of the Protestant Church of France of the 19th century…It was when, at 54, he was diagnosed with a fatal illness and virtually bedridden with only months to live that the Lord still used him to continue witnessing to the faith. He was in much pain but every Sunday afternoon he gathered his friends about him to take the Lord’s supper at his bedside, and, after listening to the reading of Scripture, he preached short homilies of great power which his friends wrote down. After his death those exhortations, full of light and truth, were published.” These are those exhortations, and they are excellent.
“Why pray when you can worry?” ?– Unknown
Anthony Russo – SBC Voices. OK, these aren’t exactly “storeroom treasures”. Let’s call them brick-a-brack from the bargain bin. A few years back I wrote a few articles at SBCVoices. If you’re not familiar with it, SBCVoices is a Southern Baptist commentary website. To be honest, I wouldn’t recommend it these days, and maybe not even back then. I rarely waded into the politics of the Southern Baptist Convention and I still don’t much write about current events. Anyway, you can find what I did write there a long time ago now.
Anchor – September 2017. Another month-long devotional series I wrote for Haven Today. Click the link and then scroll down to get to September. This month’s theme was Jesus Changes Everything.
Anchor – May 2015. God has blessed me with the opportunity to write three month-long devotional series for Haven Today. The link is to 2015, but you scroll down and start at May 1. This month’s theme was Jesus, Friend of Sinners.
Anchor – September 2012. This one’s not online. I do have the rights to give it away for free, so drop me a note and I’ll be glad to email you the .pdf. It’s a month-long devotional out of the Gospel of John and it’s called Life in His Name.
The Secret of Guidance by F.B. Meyer – Normally, on principle, I don’t like titles with “Secret” in them, but the word wasn’t so overused and click-bait-y the way it is today. It’s a helpful read for anyone looking for biblical wisdom on what to do next.
An encouraging story from the China Inland Mission of how faith sets the table.
Evangelical Tracks UK – A great one-stop shop for hundreds of post-Reformation writings, all for free.
…That’s all for now!
